McKinnons Pond Chasing Customers

McKinnons PondThe McKinnons Pond is again causing significant problems to a business owner in the area. This time, Gregory Richmond, proprietor of Sand Haven Bar and Restaurant on Runaway Bay, is complaining of a foul odour emanating from the pond, which has been the source of environmental problems for years.

On Wednesday, President of the Antigua and Barbuda Cruise Tourism Association (ABCTA) Nathan Dundas and Chief Health Inspector Lionel Michael led a small delegation to the area to assess the problem.

This came months after Richmond wrote a letter to Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer and several other government officials asking them to intervene, since his pleas for help over the years have been ignored.

According to Richmond, the pond’s water level decreases every year, and the resulting smell is very unpleasant. He said this situation has put him and his family out of business.

Richmond also said the area has become an illegal garbage dumpsite, which raises issues of sanitation.

He told Caribarena he got involved after cruise lines began cancelling tours to the Sand Haven beach area. After receiving these reports from the cruise lines, he contacted Michael.

“We have invested thousands on pump systems and diesel costs, only to find our efforts not sufficient for the size of the project, as we have only been able to afford non-commercial equipment," Richmond said. "We now have no customers and are unable to reopen our doors for tour passengers until this smell has gone."

Dundas said he and Michael agreed to involve all of the relevant bodies, to take a comprehensive approach to the problem.

“A meeting was then called today at the Ministry of Tourism and representations were sought from the Environment Division, the Fisheries Department and the Public Works Department,” Dundas told Caribarena. “The delegation, after holding initial discussions, then decided to visit the site and after observations were made they agreed to start some temporary work on the area.”

The ABCTA president indicated that he also had discussions with Minister of Tourism John Maginley, who promised to invite the Caribbean Environmental Institute, in conjunction with the local Environmental Department, to take a more in-depth look at the situation to find a long-term solution.

Dundas said he has been assured by Michael that work will begin on Friday.

Amazing, this is a perenial problem and those mentioned know it.

A simple solyution would be to aerate the water as the smell is due to a lack of oxygen in the water, hence the decomposition of organic matter, a perfectly natural process becomes anerobic, this is what creates the smell, anerobicc meaning with out oxygen !
But,I guess the experts know better!

McKinnons Pond is claimed by a number of individuals and families. Most of these claim of ownership are dubious at best. One such family being the Wexelman family who owns Kings Casino and is building an enormous mansion at Cobersons Point nearby.
What does Public Works have to do with this if private individuals claim ownership? Shouldn't the Minister of Health be ordering th owners to clean up this environmental hazzard?
Why isin't the Minister " asleep at the switch" Min. of Tourism out promoting Antigua and Barbuda rather than helping out private owners?

Where is the Minister for the Environment.

#7 Little bird » 2009-12-18 13:31

Forget about McKinnons Pond. Worry about what the Minister of the Environment is doing at Follys. Add to that the 250 acres of the old Follys Estate currently being developed. The human watse going into the streams that leads to Body Pond is going chase you all to the Mount St. John's emergency room
The Minister of Action at Follys is missing in Action at McKinnons. Where in the world is Minister Baptiste? We were promised a land use Plan in May.... then in June, now he is mum on the issue.

One reason why I am not in Antigua

#6 DC » 2009-12-18 11:48

It is quite shocking that after all these years this problem has not been corrected. The incompetence (or should I say disinterest) is mind-boggling.

At last it topok someone like Mr. Dundas and Mr Lionel Miachel to get involved in this matter to seek a resolution.
I have made so many complaints about this matter as a regular user of that beach. Its my favourite and I have heard and seen tourists and locals leave that beach because of the stench.
We need more people like these two gentlemen in the Govt sector to act instead of all the talk all and do nothing politicians.
Th anks gentlemen

McKinnons pond/swamp

#4 Wada » 2009-12-18 05:53

Swamps do indeed "stink", as they are a natural filter for pollutants and sediments. Over the past few decades, we have largely ignored the reason they exist just behind the prettiest beaches in the Caribbean. The natural inlet/outlet for the McKinnons swamp lies on that stretch of road between Marina Bay and the "Fish & Chips" stand. When this land was built up in the mid 80's to create a road connecting **enson Bay to Runaway Bay, it wreaked havoc on the natural exchange of salt water and the outlet for the swamp filtered water. Until that is restored, the residents of the area will forever be plagued.

Why is Bro B. hiding

#3 Country Man » 2009-12-18 00:30

While other stakeholders are showing some interest, Where is Minister Hilson Baptiste, Minister of Agricuture, Lands, Envronment and Housing? Funny thing he lives in the area
Up until now he has been a news hog, making weekly pronouncements while he didn't see a camera he wasn't ready for. He has been a bloviator on every issue except the environment.
Tr uth be told, he is the enemy of the Environmental Affairs Unit that is suppose to be under his jurisdiction. Baptiste is one of Antigua's disasters but media is mostly about gossip and the public is not sufficently enlightened or aware of the issues of substance that affects your well being.

So after years, a "small delegation" went out to look at the problem.

And still people wonder why more cruise ships and overnight visitors pick St. Maarten instead of Antigua,
