It might be a foolish notion, but when I watch a movie trailer, I'm expecting that even if I don't grasp entirely what the story is about, I can at least categorize it by genre.
I went to see The Box expecting a mystery/thriller. There's a distinguished guy with a box offering a couple a million dollars if they will just press the button. But oh yeah, someone, somewhere, will die. The choice is theirs. If they refuse, the offer goes elsewhere.
So of course I wanted to know how that scenario would turn out, and I was expecting some logical turn of events that would explain the link between the box and the consequences. I did not expect a movie about aliens or space ships, nor did I want to see one.
Unfortunately, that's just what I got. I could somehow maybe forgive that not-so-little discrepancy if the rest of the movie was entertaining. But it was horrible. Not horrifying or suspenseful, just horrible.
The movie was just all over the place. One minute you're heading one way and you think you've got your footing and you're kind of grasping what you're watching... then something totally out of sync happens and you're like, "Huh? OK... so that's it. Now I understand." Then it happens again, and you think, "OK, maybe not." I'd had enough long before the end, which seemed to take a million weird twists and inconsistencies to get to.
