The Calypso Monarch competition, a usually highly anticipated affair, will be held this year without three of the biggest names in the business. Foremost among those missing is the repeat winner, Queen Ivena, who has proven to be one of the most difficult customers to take down in the calypso arena since the likes of King Short Shirt.
This year however, Ivena did not even make it out of the calypso quarter finals, to the disappointment of her many fans.
The two others, both having won the coveted calypso monarch crown within the past 10 years, are Carl “De Pan Man” Richards and Edimelo.
Even though they had advanced to the semi-finals, the judges felt their material was not strong enough to carry them any further.
De Bear, who has already produced a song that has attracted a great deal of controversy, is the only former winner.
Among the other eight to meet reigning monarch King Zacari are Young Destroyer and Singing Althea, both of whom have been king and queen of calypso, but never managed to take it all on the big stage.
