Safety Concerns Forced Carnival Postponement

Carnival PostponementAntigua St John's - Chairman of the Carnival Development Committee (CDC) Vaughn Walter cited safety concerns after incessant downpours as he announced the postponement of the Carnival Tuesday parade until Sunday August 7.

Walter said his committee consulted with Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer, National Security Minister Dr Errol Cort, Minister Responsible for Carnival Eleston Adams, and the Mas Makers Association before postponing the Carnival's biggest event.

“One of the most important things we considered is the safety of people involved in the parade," he explained. "There are many bands that utilize electricity, and we are concerned that the weather could lead to accidents and a possible electrocution. I know some people are not happy with the decision, but under the circumstances, we felt that we had no other choice."

The decision to postpone the parade followed the weather disruption of the judging of the troupes and groups slated for Monday afternoon. Antigua & Barbuda, like the rest of the Leeward Islands, has been under a tropical storm watch as Tropical Storm Emily, a minimal storm, brought heavy rains across the area over a 48-hour period.

The storm has since moved away from the area, heading toward Hispaniola, but for a time on Tuesday, it was stationary just west of Dominica, and brought heavy showers across Antigua during the first half of the day.

Walter noted, “The judging of the troupes and groups in their various categories that was disrupted on Monday, along with the judging of the Band of the Year, normally slated for Tuesday, will all take place on Sunday."

He added that the parade route for Sunday is the same one in place for Tuesday.

Meanwhile, despite the postponement, members of some mas troupes were jamming in St John’s on Tuesday afternoon into the night as the revellers demonstrated their commitment that "nothing will stop the party".

The entire CDC and Festival Office should be fired.

The scary part of this whole situation is that we now know that, despite the fact that we had several days notice of the approaching storm, there were no contingency plans in place. Carnival has been in existence for so many years and up to now we have to wait until there is a problem to be calling meetings to determine what to do.

great decision

I must congratulate the authorities for taking the decision to put safety first. Persons seem to forget that a lot of the equipment is run by electricity and they are not waterproof and also capable to electrocuting persons in the wrong conditions. Nice to know that that in times of frolic that there are some level headed persons around.

It wasn't such a fantastic idea to pospone carnival because it greatly interferes with thousands of our visitors who don't have the option to change their hotel reservations or vacation plans.Besides,t he musicians are always careful to bring out the old tarpaulin to cover their instruments during inclement weather. To tell the trurh, this poor decision stans to ruin carnival in more ways than a little bad weather. That **.

Safety as first priority

#15 Dig It » 2011-08-03 17:35

I believe Walter made a good call! Safety should be a priority! In that, carvaa, like you, I really do believe King Fiah should have been in this year's calypso monarch finals! Sometimes, it takes more than the "sweetest singing voice" to get you a boarding pass to the big stage! As one judge told me a few years ago, sometimes they are other factors in judging. I heard some calypsonians compliant about some judges emphasis on who wrote their songs! As long as we continue to be bias in judging, we will keep out those who really respect and love the artform!

no more events from CDC

#14 SPEED BUMP » 2011-08-03 17:30

CARVAA, the CDC do not need to come up whith other events for that weekend. The carnival budget is already maxed out. The weekend after carnival we normally see good crowd at live performances at several establishmens where the calypsionans and bands get a few gigs. That is enough already PLUS it will be an even more vibrant downtown ALL WEEKEND from the fact that carnival, literally speaking,"na done yet"

Saturday Please

#13 Southern Beauty » 2011-08-03 16:39

Neither Saturday nor Sunday are practical, but I vote for Saturday. That way, Adventists can attend their service before the parade starts and still participate after sundown, business can still operate (with some disruption in the afternoon), other Christians can attend church on Sunday and we can all attend the Seafood Fest round south on Sunday.

I hope and pray that it gets washed out on Sunday too. God is sending a message. Later for culture and tradition. That doesn't make it right. Put God first! Time for people to break these sinful, man-made traditions and turn to God's way instead. Especially with the way the world is today.

The same goes for carnival and such so-called celebrations all over the world. Days and weeks full of drunken hedonism and loose, vile conduct. Just like sodom and gomorrah... and we all know the outcome of that don't we.

Please God, may it pour torrential rain all day on Sunday August 7th 2011. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

You people are not been practical. for the Info of some ,Satuadays is also a day of worship for some. When the opening was re-scheduled for the Sunday,it was the same day of worship, that hundreds turned out to support. If you are truly living a life for God it would not matter to you, whether it is a Sunday.Mon, or Sat,because it will not be a celebration for you. If it is just that you see it as a day to show some sort of reverence to God,then you may as well be a part of it altogether, You cannot hold God holy on a Sat/Sun,then revell on another day. The Carnival commitee needs to do whatever they think is best, you will never be able to please everyone.

Why Sunday! This is a day of worship! We are living in a Christian society, as far as I know. What happen to Saturday afternoon. Well, churches will be empty, because another god comes first. I am lokking for the Pastors, Priests, Ministers of Religion to re-act; but, maybe it is alrigh with them. God never seem to please us; he has given us his blessings of rain - and there is a problem in carrying out our Agenda.

Please, see if you can change the date to Saturday; it is not too late to tell everyone Sunday.
I just cannot comprehend what has happened to us. We need God when it is convenient for us. Organizers please re-visit the decision.

Antiguans love nonsense

#5 Avid Reader » 2011-08-03 11:21

@Carvaa

Antiguans love nonsense that is why we have these nonsense songs winning competitions that can do nothing for the industry. Didn't we have a few soca artists before that won calypso titles? Onyan and 1/2 of formerly Dread and the Bald Head, if they can manage it they can do it.

Safety First

#3 skyewill » 2011-08-03 07:19

A good move if it's really about safety. but as far as I can remember we always have a ton of rain during Carnival. And rain don't stop no party. However, if it's a safety call it means more jumping up Sunday, right?

I think it's a great idea yes the revellers could still go on the street and jump up in the rain but it's not the same especially for the beauty of carnival and what we really want the world to see. There are a number of tourist and natives alike that bring there entire family out on this particular day, they come out with there cameras and video equipment to take pictures some have there favorite corner and some just try to find the shade, others just lined the streets of Antigua to see the beautiful colors and listen to there favorite tunes and on a rainy day this would not be possible so am with the chairman and his committee plus we lost one day so we just get it back.
The CDC now need to come up with a few other event's to make this week-end a full carnival week-end. May be a boat race at frys the saturday along with a beach bash or saturday night at the ARG a calypso competition with all former kings or monarch of Wadadli competing.
Now i want every blogger to get a grab of a cd of the calypsonian with the sweetest singing voice in Wadadali King Fyre and listen to this guy and they put a soca singer Byke in the finals a head of a classic calypsonian.
