Antigua St John's - "Beautiful People," an idea born in a section of the Dynamics 2010 Carnival band, will be bigger than ever this year, through the celebrated expertise of Calvin S, who plans to steal the spotlight in this year’s celebrations.
An official launch is set for this Friday, May 6, at the Treetops Restaurant in Coolidge.
Bandleader and designer Calvin S brings over five decades of combined expertise in the two fields to the table, having owned and operated his own shops and worn many hats, including beauty coach and makeup artist.
“Expect beautiful costumes," he said. "Expect a show and a launch with a difference; a different format of presenting the costumes and of course, an atmosphere second to none…”
The entrepreneur told Caribarena.com the idea to enter this year’s event came after the praise he received from those who revelled with him in the small section of Dynamics.
He pointed out that the opportunity to enter the Carnival celebrations independently had presented itself on countless occasions, but the drive and circumstances were simply not as ideal.
“I told myself, why not give it a try this time. I’m pretty excited about the whole operation,” he said.
The theme for Beautiful People is "What Happens in Vegas; Stays in Vegas," a concept that Calvin S said came after serious thought and “likeminded” insight.
“If I can put out a band that can be an example for other bands in terms of the quality costumes that the people get… in terms of the enjoyment that the revellers get… I’m always striving for that," he said. "I don’t just want to do a band for the sake of making money.”
The troupe promises to be unlike any other, offering class, responsibility, and clean fun.
With about 400 people filling some eight categories with 24 sets of costumes, Calvin S said he intends to keep his band small enough for comfort, yet big enough for excitement.
“In each section, there will be three costumes and there are eight sections," he explained. "We are playing Show Girls, Eye Candy, Blackjack, Strip Poker, High Rollers, Shot Callers, Street Walkers and Cat Daddies, Shotgun Wedding, Scandal, and two others. I don’t want it to be an oversized band. I want it to have quality as opposed to quantity… We are still in the large band category, but in comparison to some bands we will not be as big."
Beautiful People is expected to participate in this year’s opening parade, and will also showcase itself during a T-shirt mas, and make an appearance on the Monday/Tuesday grand parade.
On the days leading up to Carnival, the band will host an all-inclusive fete called “Faces,” under the theme “The Mask”.
This is an all-black affair, complete with a self-designed “creative mask” which will be automatically part of a competition.
“I’m challenging the people to be more creative, because we’re going to give you prizes for being creative," Calvin S explained. "If you want to paint your face or add extensions.. whatever you want to do with your mask… you be as creative as possible and we will reward you for it."
Working without sponsors to date, Calvin S said he believes that his prospective sponsors deserve to see what they are supporting before they commit. He said although he has had many inquiries from sponsors, he has not yet accepted any support as he awaits Friday’s presentation.
“We’re the new kids on the block… so I think I have to prove something to the sponsors before I go to them," he said. "I have experience, but I have never done a band, and I think I have to prove to the potential sponsors that I can do it. So for my own satisfaction, I would like them to see what I can do and then make a decision.”
