Antigua St. John's - The familiar faces in the winner’s row of Colin Wanga Martin of Revelers and Alister Thomas of Ali and Associates were joined by Onyan of the Burning Flames as the big winners of the just-concluded 2012 carnival.
Revellers won the Band of the Year trophy (large bands) for a record-setting 12th consecutive year. This year’s presentation was entitled Sudden Destruction, which also captured the Band of the Year trophy for Junior Carnival, private bands segment.
Ali and Associates won for Medium Band of the Year with its presentation of A Taste of 35 Years. The mas troupe also built for the winning band in the school’s mas segment of the junior carnival activities.
Other notable winners included LIME Dynamics, who won the Spirit of Carnival trophy for Junior Carnival and third place in the Band of the Year, large segment for its presentation, The Journey Within. Second place went to one of the new entries in the troupes and groups competition, Beautiful People, led by Calvin Southwell, with its presentation Gods, Goddesses and Angels.
But the night belonged to Burning Flames Band whose song, Kick In She Back Door, was named Road March 2012. The song was played 74 times as it passed the judging points. In second place was a tie, Tian Winter for We Jamming and Ricardo Drue for Superman. They were both played 26 times. Third place went to Hard Knaxx for I Baba, which was played 23 times.
Burning Flames also won the Best Jam Band on the Road trophy.
An ecstatic Onyan said he was happy to have won the road march title despite the controversy the song generated following a call by Women Against Rape for radio stations to remove it from airplay.
Onyan said he will address the controversy sometime this week as he walked away with the Patrick A Michael Memorial Trophy presented by Parliamentarian Asot Michael, to honour his late father. Michael remarked that his family has had a long association with Carnival, noting that Maurice Michael played a major role in establishing the festival in the late 1950’s.
