Promoter Defends Presence of Dancehall Act

Jamaican dancehall DJ KonshensAntigua St. John’s - Promoters of this weekend’s Leggz Reloaded Carnival Fete have lashed back at criticism that bringing a Jamaican artiste to perform at their event is an offense to Antigua’s Carnival celebrations.

In a press release, Doyle Carter of Antz Nest Promotions said the sources of the comments need to wake up and get with the times as Carnival over the past 10 years is going through a natural momentum of change with little that anyone can really do about it.

He said the decision to bring Konshens, a leading Jamaican dancehall DJ, was merely an effort to stay ahead of the game in a soca fete market that is steadily becoming saturated.

Patrons, he added, pay their money to have a good time and Antiguans have extremely discriminating tastes.

“You’ve just got to provide the best for them and that is all we are trying to do give them the best for their money so they can leave our event thoroughly satisfied. That’s the nature of the business right now ask any promoter out there,” Carter said.

“Music is music and to place a dancehall act on the same stage with a soca act is not in any way an attempt to stomp on our culture. Hopefully, the artistes will make use of the opportunity to gain from the presence of an international act on the same stage,” he added.

The promoter further stated that demographically, Antigua & Barbuda is very much a multicultural society and there is absolutely nothing wrong with reaching out to everyone during a national celebration.

The Leggz soca fete will be taking place this Saturday at Millers by the Sea. Along with not only Konshens, the show will be featuring a strong line-up of soca artistes, including Rupee and Blood of Square One fame from Barbados, as well as Jashan Hughes and the Chezecake Factory and Tian Winter. Bringing the house down will be the Burning Flames.

Music hosts and DJs will be Supa Dymond and Wooden Foote.

The Vision - CARICOM & CSME!

#11 John French II » 2012-06-22 19:25

Notes From A Native Son Of the Rock. The comments lead me to believe that the Political Elites have failed to develop A Shared Vision of the A&B Stakeholders.
The "Patricians & Equestrians" will naturally close ranks and hold the gates to keep out the "Barbarians." Time is passing them by as the article below in today's News Titled: Slow Progress on CSME Under Review, which Quote:
Reproduced ... remarks by Senator Joanne Massiah to convene the National Consultations on Factors and Circumstances Restricting the Full Integration of the OECS and Belize into the CARICOM Single Market and Econmy (CSME), June 21st, 2012.
Revisit The Throne Speech 2012 for the GoAB's Strategic Imperatives & Objectives: Quote:
My Government's focus on CSME is not Limited to the Free Movement Of Skills Aspect. It is one that focuses more on gains and benefits that should accrue to Antigua and Barbuda. Through the CSME, local private sector entities have an opportunity to expand and establish into eleven (11) other Member States.
Therein lies the Rub. Honesty! Have Mercy Pon Us - "bewildered and bemused Electorate".

#10 It Is Me » 2012-06-22 12:48

First of all I hardly heard any new soca from Antigua for this year yet.

When it comes to this issue I have to laugh ... are they trying to force people to like local artists?

Are they saying that if I an Antiguan want to spend my money to promote a show in Antigua I have to use Antiguan artists alone during Carnival?

Didn't our local artist Hard Knoxx just come back from T&T during their carnival?

What kind of backward mentality we have? If our local artists can't stand up to the international artists that is their business but when I am ready to promote my shows nobody nah tell me who can come and who can't!!!

Seriously?

#8 Common Cents » 2012-06-22 12:00

Why is this even an issue? I have no problem whatsoever with a Jamaican artiste coming over here and singing in a PRIVATELY organised concert.

Likewise, I have no issue with an Antiguan going elsewhere and singing.

@college student and others, this is a PRIVATE enterprise. NO one should be able to tell me that I can't bring a service/product from overseas simply because it wasn't produced here.

Internation act!!! I've never even heard of this guy Koshens how did he become international.

@ Avid Reader - You are correct Antiguan artists should be supported especially during this time - we promote Jamaican culture all year round and now we're losing what little is left for the Antiguan artists around this season. I 'm not even happy with Trini and Barbadian artists being highlighted on shows unless its reciprocal. Represent!

This is not a carnival Committee event..If the gentleman wants to have or promote or show its up to him to do what he think will garner the biggest audience and profit for him... If anyone has a problem with that..Just dont attend!!!

It's called the free market, so if the fan base supports the event the promoters will react in kind. There are lot of fetes to choose from. Are there any laws preventing promoters from having all Antiguan artist in their fetes?

There are so many good artists in Antigua, now is the time to support and promote them. When last has anyone seen an Antiguan performing in Jamaica?

Here is a simple solution. If you don't like the idea of a dancehall artiste performing at a carnival event, don't go to the event! There are many events to choose from....

Now can we get back to discussing serious issues!
