Antigua St John’s – St. John’s Development Corporation (SJDC) has designated July 2, 2012 to August 11, 2012 as the Carnival Vending Period and is in the process of accepting applications for small entrepreneurs to ply their trade along the main streets of the city.
The 55th anniversary of Carnival will be celebrated from July 28 to August 7 under the theme “In Living Colour” and by offering frontline vending areas SJDC is affording entrepreneurs an opportunity to share in the economic benefits of the festival.
Therefore, successful applicants will be given permission to vend during the designated period from 8:30 am until 3 pm, Mondays through Fridays.
“All fees must be paid in full to the St. John’s Development Corporation before the vending permit is issued,” an SJDC release stated.
“A fee of EC$300.00 will be charged for clothing, toys, gifts; $250.00 for food; $150.00 for small trays and coolers and $100.00 for small trays only. Vendors must also pay a mandatory alternate fee of EC$50.00.”
SJDC explains the alternate fee as permitting licensed vendors to deploy persons other than themselves as sellers at their locations.
In addition, vendors are asked to adhere to the following rules and regulations which have been set for the period.
These are:
1. No vending is allowed alongside any Bank during working hours.
2. The vendor must not block or obscure the passage to any authorised business in St. Johns City. Vendors must sell only in spots assigned by SJDC.
3. The vendor selling food must have a valid food handler’s permit. Food vendors with BBQ Grills must have a fire extinguisher while plying their trade.
4 The vendor selling alcoholic beverages must have a valid liquor license.
5. The maximum size of tents must be 10 x 10 (ten feet by ten feet). The vendor is allowed the use of a tent, or umbrella, not both. No tents or umbrellas are allowed in the streets, only on sidewalks.
6. All tents inclusive of tables, chairs, crates, trays, must be removed at the end of each day. Failure to comply with this request will result in the tents being moved by St. John’s Development Corporation and the revocation of the license.
7. The vendor must keep his/her stall table or fittings clean and free of litter. Vendors must sell only in the area designated by the Corporation.
