Antigua St John's - Sisters, Brittany and Brianne Barnes, have thrown their hats into the ring for this year’s Carnival mas’ competition with their designs ‘Illumination – Ignazia’.
The costumes were unveiled late last week as the sisters, with the support of family and friends, took the bold step to showcase their designing talents in what is envisioned to be the beginning of a long line of illuminating carnival concepts.
“The inspiration behind Ignazia is to create an intimate, luxurious mas’ experience for our masqueraders while uplifting Antiguan culture and talent. We also strongly believe in respecting and taking care of our environment, hence Ignazia is Antigua's first "GREEN" mas’ troupe,” the sisters told Caribarena.
The concept behind the designs is said to be a simple one, with the girls wanting to “stay true” to a theme, Enchanted Rainforest. This reflects the cultural attributes of Antigua through each design, with each section (characters) being original to Antigua and Barbuda.
The sections are Egret Gods, Hummingbird Sprites, Wild Orchid Fairies and Lily Nymph.
The first-time troupe is catering for 250 to 300 people to fill all four sections. This will place them in the medium group category.
“These numbers are ideal since it is our first year and we want to make sure that we give our masqueraders the attention and pampering they deserve. We are not only trying to cater to different body types, but also different personalities. This is another reason behind selling our costumes as characters. The public can decide what character they most identify with,” the designers said.

Further, it is felt that the combination of intimacy, luxury and “focus on uplifting Antigua” during the carnival season, the troupe will easily separate itself from other mas’ bands.
“Everyone should be able to experience the magic that is Antiguan mas’,” the girls said.
So far, more than half a dozen troupes that will participate in this year’s mas’ parade have unveiled their designs.

GOOD LUCK
Culture needs to be defined, because while it is admirable to view young talent on parade, it is equally disturbing that culture is now a meat market. The young women are truly sensual an exciting, hopefully I am not overly critical, so I withold judgment until I view the other sections. But, I wiish the young entrepreneur all the best in promoting Antigua's first "GREEN " Carnival
