Antigua St John's - Multiple-award winning Carnival mas troop Ali and Associates unveiled its designs for the 2012 Carnival , along with its customary sponsorship award ceremony.
Director Alister Thomas said his 35-year-old group continues to strive to rebuild the “high standards and quality” of mas in Antigua, without the “vulgarity” that the event has become known for.
“We feel we should move beyond the limits of mas and we have diversified our reach,” he said. “I’m proud to have contributed to this both locally and internationally. The quality and standard of the mas must be lifted and held high.”
Thomas pointed out that 80 percent of mas designs are imported, and the country, which once led the region in creativity and ingenuity, “is loosing talent.”
This year, Ali and Associates features nine under the theme, “A Taste of 35”.
The compilation features a reflection of things past, and includes titles like Eclipse and offer tribute to outstanding icons of Carnivals. Unlike many band launches so far for the season, Ali and Associates did not have any consumes on display, but offered sketches of its designs for both sexes.
Thomas and his daughter Serwa, and son Damani put the designs and colours together. The siblings are poised to take over the family business led by Thomas and his wife.
Ali and Associates has won all the major prizes in the local event since its genesis 35 years ago. Carnival in Antigua & Barbuda began in 1957.
The grand occasion and magnificent evening event was climaxed with AUA, Global Bank of Commerce, Hadeed Motors, Should Toys and Gifts, Town House Mega Store, Cool and Smooth, LIAT Quick Pack, Anjo Whole Sale-Grace Foods, GCS, Percival Enterprise, IMobile, Stitch World, and Ms Monica David receiving some very precious and high quality plaques and statuettes.
