Counselling Mandated for Expelled Eight

Counselling Mandated for Expelled EightAntigua St John's - The eight students expelled from Ottos Comprehensive School last week have been committed to mandatory counselling as part of the Ministry of Education’s new policy.

The youth, one of whom is challenging his expulsion, will attend a series of psycho-social interventions requested by Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer as part of the overall programme for students expelled under violent circumstances.

The counselling is being conducted collaboratively between the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Social Transformation.

News of this came as the public has been questioning the ministry’s rationale behind expelling students so close to receiving their diplomas, and releasing them without adequate programmes to assist their integration into society.

Some cited the situation in St Lucia and Jamaica - with its Alternative Secondary Transition Education Programme (ASTEP).

“Why is it that we, in Antigua & Barbuda, only weep and engage in new reaction but do nothing to truly deal with the causes of our pain?” one Caribarena.com reader asked.

Another opined, “Expel the students.... then what are we left with as a society.... four uneducated misfits who become criminals because they are unable to find gainful employment as a result of not completing secondary school?”

This website has learned that the ministry is also considering a mentorship programme for those who require it to establish themselves in a trade or otherwise.

And if the drill instructors today have half the stones they had in the days that chef did his basic training that he assures you ,you will succeed or die trying failure is simply not an option for these guys.
as for raising your hand against a woman teacher or anyone else the female drill instructors will fix that problem real fast for ya.
Dry place to sleep and 3 meals a day . That youth is a lot more than you will get in prison because that’s where you are heading right now counseling or not because you have no diploma no skill and you don’t even know how to behave so what is your country going to do with you? what do you have to offer Chefs beloved Antigua?
I hear you now Chef who is going to pay for all that? We will Antigua will because we will not lose one Antiguan youth if it can be helped. and it is far less expensive that housing the youth in prison for rape robbery and murder.. of whom ????? your wife your daughter your mother??? Will you act than?
It will be Cheaper better because not everything can be expressed in money for what value do you put on life?????
Goodnight.

Bad case of gas or brainfart you pick....3

The defense force , and counseling there is not mandatory.. good place to get some discipline and respect for your fellow citizens and country. For the next 4 to 6 years .
The force will not ask you if you would like to get a highschool diploma, you will be thought and you will pass because the force does not ask it will bend you until you fit or break that’s all up to your self
good place to channel that aggression and anger you feel inside, we call it PT and drills in the force.
If building a healthy body and mind is not hard enough for you don’t worry the force has a teaching tool for that
We call it hand to hand combat/combat skills but really you will get your back side kicked until you get it right and feel/act like a man with respect.

Your teacher is 5 years older than you and she looks kinda hot or 60 and you hate them.
Home ? Did chef say Home family and support ??? aha never mind Chef can figure that one.
Chef can imagine your frustration and aggression but chef does not tolerate it . see youth if you fit the description above Chef would like to tell you there is a way out of this for you.

Fellow Bloggers this story has been bothering Chef like a case of bad gas, :-x attentive readers can likely smell where the Chef is coming from. :-*
Clearly now Chef simply needs to relief the pressure so first of : the Minister should take some of her own advice, expel your self from this position and seek urgent counseling , nee Chef mandates that you seek counseling, because according to Chef you have now totally lost your mind.seriously you need help, just as much if not more than these unfortunate kids.
Now second these kids the hoodlums and vagabonds who believe their manhood is to big to listen and take advice listen to chef and listen carefully because chef is only going to tell you this once.... :-)

Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock. You are Correct. The Good Hon Dr. PM has moved quickly to rescue the Good Hon. Dr. Min. Of Ed from the Weak Limb she climbed on to Assuage Public Anger with Nary a thought as to anything Transformationa l. A Total Reactionary and Transactional Act when Clarity of Shared Vision, Mission and Enlightened Policy Directives Should have been the Lightning Bolts and Thunder emmanating from the High Office rather than "Playing in the MUD." "TEK DAT!". Not Speaking fullsomely of Arrogance & Haughtiness in full throated ease signifying Nothing but Sound & Fury. After all of these years at Nation Building and Educational Failures and Disasters - A Transactional attempt at a PTA. These are now being set up and controlled by the Bureaucracy rather than the Stakeholders. Many Men wish Death Pon Us. Have Mercy Pon Us. Hon Dr. PM Chase those Baldheads away from this Initiative. See Op Eds by Dr Newton & Dr. Mottley. The Good Dr. PM did the Right Thing. Now Let us Hope that The Good Dr. Min of Ed does the Honourable Thing which would fully answer your Troubling and Vexatious Question. Much Respect.

@Dr. Sheila Holder

Dr. Holder its actually done successfully in Japan/Australia , but in those cases (as i mentioned in my previous post) after expulsion a magistrate would sentence the child to attending mandatory counseling at a juvenile detention centre (at the request/recomme ndation of the education board and not actually serving time there) - i think that's what Mrs. Pringle meant by mandatory councelling.

the problem is, we do not have a juvenile detention centre here capable of rehabilitating them properly (sorry but Boy's Training School doesn't cut it...)

............... .....

its a good idea to mandate counseling for them as its not really going to change them if we just put them out on the streets, especially given the crime situation in antigua and all.

the reality in antigua is we do not have a juvenile detention/rehab ilitation centre as if we did, or if we had more counselors in the schools, many situations with teens today could be averted. many come from violent homes. many families appear perfect when in public - but from my experience as a preschool/kinde rgarten teacher i realized that many crazy things happen behind the closed doors of their homes that begin shaping them from very early.

if the child must be expelled, then expel them, but if we just put them out in the street they'll just turn out much worse

#7 Nameless » 2011-11-24 11:22

How can the minstry "mandate" treatment after they EXPELL them? After they get the treatment then what? Would they be able to return to class?
I thought expell meant you can never return to school, compare to suspenstion!
Someone please clarify this for me

Notes From A Native son Of The Rock. "Each One Teach One." Our "Thugs" will notQuote:
Fade far away, dissolve, and quite forget What thou among the leaves hast never known, The weariness, the fever, and the fret Here, where men sit and hear each other groan; Where palsy shakes a few, sad, last grey hairs, Where youth grows pale, and spectre-thin, and dies; Where but to think is to be full of sorrow And leaden-eyed despairs; Where beauty cannot keep her lustrous eyes, Or new Love pine at them beyond to-morrow.

At all times respect the Offices, even though we pillory the Office Holders. When we "Play in The MUD' the end game should lead to clarity of a Shared Vision & Mission. It is quite clear that Ministry Officials were too Haughty & Arrogant to admit theirTotal Failure & Disrespect. Here is the GG of JA: Quote:
"I urge you fellow presidents and governors-general to continue to commit our offices and extend our influence to reach our young people. They are the future of the Caribbean. We have to build in them confidence toward the future, an indomitable spirit, and defiance in the face of adversity and challenge,"
Go Well. Much Love & Respect.

Mandate Counseling?

#5 Dr. Sheila Holder » 2011-11-24 11:14

So sorry Minister of Eduction, you can't mandate counseling. Beyond the formal structures of therapy, the whole process presupposes an kind of personal surrender to self-developmen t and personal transformation. You may encourage and stirr the need for counseling to empowerthose who need it most to discover paths to heal themselves. But you can never Mandate it!

Transformative? you asking for too much

#3 tenman » 2011-11-24 10:27

John you asking for too much. The same stake holders are involved in bringing about the public library. The Daily Observer today, No Public Library by year-end by Rory Butler, reports that the library scheduled for completion this year, will have to wait yet another year. The report states:

Quote:
In January this year Spencer categorically stated, “The public library must be completed and operationalised by 2011, whatever the situation.” Spencer at the time said his administration was taking full responsibility for the inordinate delay in the completion of the facility, “but it must be done.” However, 11 months later construction work is yet to resume as contractors are still waiting on
Its a pity that unlike other offices we can't have a tribunal before 2014 to examine the governments conduct.

Hip! Hip! Hooray! To The Most Caring PM

#2 John French II » 2011-11-24 09:45

Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock. Hon Dr. PM, I knew that you would have found it in your heart to ensure that the Good Hon Min of Ed's "Thugs" Quote:
will attend a series of psycho-social interventions requested by Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer as part of the overall programme for students expelled under violent circumstances.
Give Thanks & Praise. To the Most Merciful. Hon Dr. PM, the "Bewildered Electorate" - "Your Servants" as some unelected Senators are wont to say - with Quote:
A Dr.Teacher From Greebay School! A Dr. PM From Grays Farm-Greenbay!
A Dr. Minister of Education who Enjoys Playing In The Mud!
Antigua & Barbuda's "Bewildered Electorate" has hit the Motherload on Redonda.
Now if you can only bring together, Dr. Teacher from Greenbay School and the Good Hon Dr. Minister Of Ed. Transformative rather than Transactional Reactionary Steps will be put in place to save the "Thuggish Minds" for Nation Building.
Your Transformative Plans will definitely bring about your desired legacy as "The Most Caring Caribbean Politico." May Heaven Help your Hon Dr. Minister of Education and the Nation Of Antigua & Barbuda.

Alex Holder

#1 tenman » 2011-11-24 09:36

Alex Holder, Jamaica's Alternative Secondary Transition Education Programme has nothing to do with secondary school students who has been expelled. The program is to aid students who have not attained mastery on the Grade Four Literacy Test and therefore not able to sit the Grade Six Achievement Test for placement in secondary schools. Details can be found at jamaica.kdid.org/queries-and-discussions/edu-consultation-alternative-secondary-transitional-education-programme-aste.
