Antigua St. John’s - Adia Crump has been declared the 2012 Island Scholar, and with that honour would receive a full scholarship to any university.
Crump was the top student in the Antigua State College's A-Level department and attained two Grade 1s and Two Grade 2s same as last year.
Her subjects were Accounting, Economics, Management of Business, Communication Studies and Caribbean Studies.
Crump said she had no idea she won the top award until she was contacted by the media.
"It was a lot, a lot of studying. I had to put a lot of trust in God because without him I don't think any of that would have been possible," she said.
"I just did what I had to do and at the end of the day I placed my faith in God and he came through."
The 17 year old is planning to pursue an undergraduate programme in Accounting and Finance at the University of the West Indies. She would do the first year of the programme here.
At the level of the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations there were 1821 subject sittings overall, in 41 subject areas. Eighty per cent of the subject sittings resulted in a passing grade, 3% more than last year.
A 100 per cent pass rate was achieved in Food & Nutrition Unit 1, Biology Unit 2, Environmental Science, French Unit 2, History Unit 2, and Management of Business.
Improvement was recorded in Mathematics passes, in contrast to the performance at the secondary school level, in particular.
Passes for Pure Math Unit 2 was up 20 per cent, while applied Math Unit 1 increased five per cent.
Minister of Education Dr. Jacqui Quinn-Leandro said this is a very commendable and great performance at the CAPE level.
"While at the secondary level we seem to be having some difficulties and challenges, our students are shining brilliantly at the A-level," she told the media.
"We ought to commend the teachers at the ASC and we have find some answers as well: Why are our children doing so well in Common Entrance (primary school) in Math; then falling off at the Secondary level and then at College/A-Levels; they are again shining? This is a question and an issue which we must solve," she said.
Aside from the Island Scholar, the top performers in the different college departments are also awarded government scholarships.

Interesting
From experience I realize that this Island Scholar thing has too many loop holes.
For the past few years it's usually Business students who are getting this 'title'. The science students at A-level have a rough time and will forever be left out.
Normally forced to do all sciences -Chem, Phys and Bio along with Math- it's much more challenging to meet the criteria as oppose to the Business students who usually take 3 subs which are less challenging.
The criteria should be revised.

Congrats
That being said, my heart sank when I read yet another Island Scholar has chosen to pursue finance/account ing. I wish the brilliant minds of this nation would diversify their interests. We desperately need talented individuals in the sciences and engineering. These creators can push our country in novel directions while our fleet of talented finance and accounting grads manage all the revenue generated. As it stands there is less and less money to account for everyday. We need to **s our national priorities.
