Antigua St. John’s – A number of students were commended for their outstanding performances in the 2011 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations, an accomplishment which Education Minister Dr. Jacqui Quinn-Leandro said is placing the country in a league above the rest of the Caribbean.
In heaping high praises on the gold, silver and bronze awardees during the 27th LIME/CXC awards presentation ceremony on Thursday, Dr Quinn-Leandro said their achievements were worth celebrating.
“When we look at all subject areas Antigua & Barbuda presented 9,865 students and of that number 6,781 or 69 per cent of our entries earned Grades 1 to 3.
Compare that to the region where of the 600,000 candidates 59 per cent of the entries earned Grades 1 to 3. The picture shows that we are moving from being on par with the rest of the region to being well above par,” the minister stated.
She reminded the awardees that while they have completed one stage of their lives, another transition is taking place, which she cautioned will provide its own unique challenges.
“Students, this evening is your moment in time but your academic success thus far assures me that this will not be your only moment in time. Some are already attending university overseas; others on the threshold of university. Life from here on will change for you as you have known it.
