Antigua St john's - The Liberta School captured the 4th annual Harney Motors Zone III Grade II Math Quiz in last Friday's event. Freeman's Ville and Seaview Farm schools earned 2nd and 3rd places, respectively.

The quiz is designed to boost students' math skills and encourage a greater liking for the subject. It also serves as a professional development activity learning activity for their class teachers who are on hand to note strengths and weaknesses in students, and also gain ideas on how to make Math teaching and learning more meaningful.
 
Assistant Director of Education and Measurement and Evaluation Officer Patricia Collins noted that there needs to be more emphasis on mathematics in schools, knowing that many jobs that students will aspire to are math-based.

Highlighting some of the weaknesses and strengths which students exhibited, she encouraged teachers to do their best with their students.

Education Officer-Zone III Desiree Antonio also encouraged teachers to give more attention to students who experience difficulties, since they are the ones who need their teachers' assistance most.

The students who are usually quite excited to participate in the activity were further encouraged to continue to work hard at developing their skills.

She reiterated that the unique feature in the quiz to include teams comprising of both strong and weak students in math demonstrates that all  students are valued and must be given the opportunity to participate in activities which are conducted in a non-threatening atmosphere.
 
The Zone will continue its annual math quizzes by hosting its Grades III and IV Math quizzes on May 18 and 25, respectively.
