Antiguan Poised to Graduate with Honours‬

Salomon-and-Aziz-Salomon-DoumithAntigua St John's - Graduating from the St Joseph's Academy with top honours at age 15 was a major milestone in the life of Aziz Doumith.

But his most recent accomplishments have far surpassed his previous and his father, Salomon Doumith, couldn't be more proud.

Aziz Doumith is poised to graduate with a coveted 4.0 GPA and the sought-after title of summa cum laude from the esteemed Lehigh University in Pennsylvania with a BSc in Computer Science and Management, and a minor in psychology, and earth and environmental science.

“I can’t be more proud than I am as a parent,” the scholar’s father said. "I am sure all parents would want the same for their kids.

My role is to make sure he gets what he requires and comes back and puts something into our country Antigua."

The 20 year old transferred from the Moravian College in Pennsylvania after six months. He moved to the US to further his education after high school.

Doumith, president and CEO of ACT, told Caribarena.com his son plans to capitalize on a scholarship he received from the university to complete his masters degree. He said his son intends to complete the programme within 12 months, having already enrolled in masters level courses.

“From a family point of view, it is a touchy thing, and although we know what he is capable of, it is always touching to witness his accomplishments," he  said.

Lehigh University is among the top 20 schools in the United States for business, engineering, and computer science.

Aziz Doumith, according to his father, plans to move on to his PhD immediately after completion of his masters programme, either at Harvard University or the acclaimed Massachusetts Institute of Technology – MIT, in Boston.

“I told him to take his time, but he says he can finish in the time he give himself,” Solomon Doumith said. “He is already doing master programme courses with existing credits.”

The father explained that his son has recovered considerably well since his mother's death around the time of his CXC excellence. He topped the 2008 Caribbean Examination Council exams.

The scholar is set to graduate with his BSc honors on May 21 at the Goodman Stadium in Philadelphia.

Why are we being so negative with everything?
Kudos to the young man who is determined to be sucessful in life by pursuing his eduacational goals. It does not matter and should not matter which university we choose attend, as long as we can afford it and apply ourselves educationally. We are free to choose our own destiny as long as it's posiitve. Instead of making a big issue by comparing universities, we should try to encourage the young people in A&B to further their education instead of selling drugs, robbing people or just hanging out.
Once again, CONGRATULATIONS young man and all the best for the future.

UWI has produced some of the best minds in this Caribbean as well as abroad. I have both my undergraduate and masters from UWI and have been hired by a top notch US institution with those degrees and prove my mettle everyday. UWI's degrees are recognised world wide and there is nothing substandard about the education.

I just want to add how easy it is for people to call down people and hide behind their computer screens. For a research project I was able to read several great polices written by Mr. O'Mard that are STILL in use by many institutions of this country - great contributions. He is recognised regionally and internationally for his contribution to the Arts both in Antigua and outside of Antigua. So to the windbag who commented - get a life!

Someone posted this story to my page and for something that started so positive the comments have put a really nasty spin on what was a celebratory story of a young man's achievements.

No comparisons needed. Media is as good as its sources and if persons want their accolades then just pass that information on to a media outlet no sense bragging about what you got in here and then complaining it was not published.

I don't really think it has anything to do with his father. For this years graduating class from UWI Cave Hill - the 9 or 10 of us who attained First Class Honours were covered in the Observer - covering persons who have done well isn't a new thing.

2/2

Recently, the members of the Norman Manley Law School (every single member on both teams having attained their LLB's at the University of the West Indies) went on to win International Moots in Germany and South Africa (2 years in a row) beating out the likes of Yale.

Sir Clare Roberts, KCN, QC attended UWI and he sat as President of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights in 2005 (something every Antiguan should be proud of.) Likewise did Tracy Robinson attain her degree from UWI and is presently a Commissioner on the IACHR as well - her father Patrick Robinson is the President of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia ... (first black man to hold that post mind you..)

So, no, a degree from UWI isn't worthless....

So disappointed with the comments here.

First off, congrats to Aziz because despite your aptitude it takes effort and determination to graduate with honours wherever you are graduating from and a 4.0 is a huge deal. I wish I could have left it there as I had intended to do when I followed this link.

But having read some of the comments regarding the University of the West Indies, I find that I can't. I attended the University of the West Indies and for all of you tearing down the institution the education I received there was superb.

For those behaving as if the degree attained from UWI is worth nothing on the global market, you might want to correct yourself. Several degrees that are offered by the University of the West Indies are incredibly reputable on the world market (the Medical degree being just one of them). One of my friends graduated with a Computer Science degree and is now finishing up his second masters in that field at Oxford (managed to attain an average of 4.21 (.9 shy of 4.3 which is the highest possible average).

This only happens when the graduating student's father owns ACT.
Many students have earned 4.0 GPA's at top institutes, a number of which are more prestigious than Lehigh, but you don't see them with Caribarena articles.
Good PR for the Doumiths though, probably setting him up to eventually run for political office.

Notes From A Native Son Of the Rock. Oh content, why would you a Scholar debate The Best of Higher Education Institutions from the past to "the present period, that some of the noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only." Naugthy! You must have been taught from a tender age to know your place in life on this SIDS. The Ecclesiastcs quoting from the Beatitudes - The Sermon on The Mount - would have been fullsome in their praise and reinforced in your young and fertile mind: Quote:
"Blessed Are The Meek For They Shall Inherit The Earth."
What unfriendly god bereft you of your senses? Did the gods of Wealth, Pluto, Meego, Chao Kung-Ming, Lakshmi, disturb your rest with Busta Rhymes Money lyrics causing you to state: Quote:
Our self-love is mortified, when we think our opinions, and even our tastes, customs, and dresses, either arraigned or condemned: as, on the contrary, it is tickled and flattered by approbation.
As a Scholar, the People ask that you research, who or what company is the Reseller for Lenovo Computers on the Rock? Right Answer & Back To Grace!

To God be the glory! Congratulations to Aziz for using the gifts the Lord has blessed him with to the best of his ability. The Scriptures say that whatever we do should be done as to the Lord. Congratulations to Salomon for being a loving and supporting father. Congratulations to his siblings for honoring their brother and seeking to be the unique individuals God created them to be. Celebrate the God ordained institution of the family. I pray God's richest blessings on Salomon's new blended family.

HANDS OFF UWI

#20 Grey Ghost » 2012-04-13 19:12

Why hit Caribbean institutions of higher learning, when many distinguished sons and daughters of Caricom achieved their knowledge, or was part of UWI institutional framework, consi der Sir Arthur Lewis, Sir Hilarly Beckles, Walter Dr.Rodney, from UWI St. Ausustine in Trinidad, UWI Mona,Jamaica, Cave Hill, Barbados, all contributed to Antigua & Barbuda, and Caricoms development. UWI's do not necessarily have the finance to challenge U.S.universitie s, but have produced world beaters in all areas of culture.

Also, there are many other ordinary Antiguans & Barbudans whonever went to UWI but there foundation was the Antiguan system of education, Tim Hector, Lester Bird, Bruce Goodwin, Dr.Isaac Newton, Dr. Thomas, Dobrene O'Mard, Dr.Percival Perry, Sir V C. Bird, Sir George Walter, Donald Halsted, Novelle Richards, and many many more scholars from throughout the Caribbean.

Also, wheredo you believe CLRJames and Dr. Eric Williams were educated, wemust celebrate our people. There are many extra-ordinary intelligent black youths in Antigua & Barbuda, who may not want the fanfare of publicity, we celebrate you too!

Give Caribbean education the thumbs up!

Small point of correction: As far as I know, UWI degrees are as accepted (to my knowledge) as the same class of degree around the world. I personally have furthered my studies outside the Caribbean after receiving a degree from UWI, and I know several people who are currently enrolled/have been enrolled in Masters/Doctora te programs, and none have ever had a problem with their degree being accepted.

Why you think our PhD's can't deliver water? The entire Caribcommunity is suffering from those UWI mentality. Put economics situation is because of UWI students. The issue is not whether others have achieved similar accolades as we are well aware that there are many out there who have, but the spotlight belongs to this young man and we should all be proud of his accomplishments .

Here is a suggestion: instead of comparing educations systems the way you did, it would've probably been better had you said that the high standards of education in ANU/the C'bean make studies in the US less of a challenge for our students (this young man included)...the power of words.

Have you ever wondered why so many people clamor to get degrees from American universities? Because a degree from most universities in the US is acceptable almost everywhere imaginable, while the same cannot be said about a degree from UWI.

@ content , are you aware that harder doesn't necessarily mean better, tell us what percentage of UWI courses are practical? We in the caribbean are proud to declare that we have a higher educational standard that the US, but we ought to stop and think how well is our system and approah to teaching working for us? The long drawn out theorectical approach to teaching that's so prevalent in the caribbean lacks relevance in the real world. We need to focus on practicality. What good does head knowledge serve when you don't know how to apply it in the real world...... ,what's the purpose in spending long hours studying out of a book, just to past an exam that bears no relevance in the job market?

The adage "pactice makes perfect holds true here". I'll choose US education anyday over the caribbean ; the former allows you to become an expert in your feild of study, whereas the latter inundates you with all booksense at the expect of commonsense and what is truly applicable in the real world. US are straight to the point, no long drawn own theory necesssary. Kudos to the young man afterall he has demonstrated his ability to excel under both caribbeann and US educational system

@ Content, your post has a ring of bitterness and envy. If you wanted your educational laurels and accomplishment published why not contact Caribarena or any of the other printed and electronic media in Antigua & Barbuda (A&B). Regarding your assumption that obtaining a degree at any USA university or college is easy, try enrolling at one, assuming you meet the admissions secondary or high school GPA requirements, you are accepted, with the assumption its easy, you can breeze through the cirriculum, however you are not maintaining a GPA that is up to the required standard, see how easy you will get kick out...Btw how many of those professors who taught you at UWI benefited from an USA university or college education? Okay, don't respond, just reflect.....

When parents make sure that they are they are there for their children; no matter what, there is success.

Parents even if you don't know the maths, or the science or don't have the time, take just that five minutes of time and sit with your child. It will pay off in the long run and as "Maria" opined congrats again.
