Also Remember the assistant GM at the hotel in five Islands. She was fired and then the owner's son eventually got the GM position after the GM retired. He is a young inexperienced individual who has brought nothing to the hotel. At the end of the day the white owners want white faces in their management team.

NICE WORDS

Nice words but in reality we will just have to wait and see what happens. However I do not much much credence into these talks as individuals close to the AHTA are also guilty of of victimising or keeping down Antiguans for non-Antiguians. I have worked in the indusrty for many years and know of several individuals who have suffered the same fate. Immediately coming to my mind is a yound lady with great potential who received a scholarship from the Austrian Government to study Hospitality Management. She graduated with honors and after returning home to the Hotel where she was previously working she was laid off less than 1 year after her return because of low occupancy whilst her NON-Antiguan colleagues remained employed. A bright young Antiguan with soo much to offer who has now left the industry. A total Shame.

A Positive step

It is very good that all the stakeholders in this issue have sat down and began to speak frankly on what the issues are. Antiguans need to push themselves to become certified in the Hospitality Industry even if it means doing it from their own pockets. The argument that the Hoteliers use about lack of experience/qual ifications can be countered if we educate ourselves. I do not believe the Hoteliers are correct though because many times they bring in inexpereinced white skinned people to be Manager who are in turn trained by our dark skinned people so that the dark skinned people can be managed by the white skinned people. At least if we have our paperwork then AHTA can no longer use that as an excuse not to give us the job.
