If you truly want reform and democracy, I would look to the US and not the UK. We have to look for ways to avoid uncertainty and confusion. While I am not familiar with the UK system,, if you are going to look to the UK, adopt the part where they can call for a “no confidence vote” which can lead to new elections. I believe that was the case with Blair, and probably Brown.

Refer to recent UK elections with hung parliament outcome

I suspect the UK system is not very different (someone please correct me if I am wrong) but earlier this year following the UK general elections, there was a hung parliament with the conservative winning the most seats but without an outright majority. The Liberal party, which won the least number of votes ultimately became "king makers" and over a period of two weeks explored their options of forming a coalition government with both the Labour Party and the Conservative party. In the end they decided to go with the Conservatives but were not compelled to. They also had the option of forming a coalition government with the Labour Party.
If we are to follow logic of the above article (and assuming similar legal/constitut ional provisions in Antigua and the UK), then the Queen would have had no option but the choose the Conservatives (most seats of a single party).

add the Ofice of the Prime Minister

As I have said today, The UPP must be congratulated and we have to move on for the good of Antigua & Barbuda. Now it’s time to look ahead and see how we can make Antigua better. I have posted recently that Antigua is in need of reform and I had begun to note what would be needed to attempt to bring about meaningful reform. I must say that the Pimpernel has outlined many of the areas I had considered. I agree with him completely.
Whi le the points outlined by the Pimpernel are not all inclusive, I would add the Office of the Prime Minister to the list to be individually elected by the people. In this case you could have any qualified candidate running for the Office of Prime Minister. They would have to campaign in and be voted for by all constituencies. This would be akin to the way it’s done in the US. The elected individual will be the Leader of Antigua & Barbuda and not be bogged down in parliamentary proceedings. He would set the agenda and the parliamentarian s would carry it out, subject to veto and override.
I will have more to say at a later date.

A more accountable system required part 2

Directors of Statutory Corporations should be chosen by a bi-partisan committee. And they should be held accountable for their stewardship of the corporation. The Financials Secretary should be held accountable if he/she fails to table the country’s finances within the prescribe period. Which means he can lose his job or be impeached for failure to do so. We need to get serious with the business of the country and do not run it like a sweetie shop. I have a big problem not knowing how my money is spent. If you take my money through taxes you have to account for it. Simple as that. Or leave me with my money to do what I want to. But these are just one man’s wishes and hope someday we might see changes in our political system where we the people are more involved and get proper and accountable representation from our political leaders.

I have said it before our system of government is in desperate need of an overhaul. But I do not think that our politicians are ready, willing and able to do so. There is a great lack of accountability and political interference in the processes of government. I cannot see how one can sit in parliament pass laws and then goes to his office to further work on policies and executing these. If you are involve in passing law that should be it. Nothing more. The persons that run a ministry should be either elected or chosen based on qualification to do the job. All the guidance the person need is the policies. That’s how you get the best person for the Job. And no more square pegs in round holes. We need more oversight committees. These should perhaps fall under the GG office. And they should have Power of Subpoena. And I agree the person in the GG Office should not be under any political influence. So perhaps this person should also be elected but for a longer period. And I also agree that senators should also be elected so that they do not just become rubber stamps.

Cool Ruler, I have seen posts by you supporting what the writer wrote that the GG is simply a rubber stamp. You also articulated the need for changing this. Its just strange that now someone advocates the same thing you have, you then claim its wrong. I get the impression something that you have multiple personalities.
Writer I am in agreeing with your article as far as the GG and AG are concerned. However the other offices I feel should be voted on in parliament as I think is done for most of them. I have seen situations in the US where because of politics a DPP (District Attorney) is propelled to hound someone. I would prefer such offices are removed from political pressure whether it be by voters or elected members.

This pimpernel can say what he likes and try to spin as much as he wants. If the decision is upheld, each person will have six elected persons supporting them for the post of PM. In the event of a tie the Governor General is duty bound to give Lovell the first crack at forming the government, since they are the current party in power. If he fails then Giant malt will be ask too. The pimpernels of this world continue to insult the good lady into thinking she has not already sought and obtained legal advice in the event of such eventually. Good try pimpernel, try again.
