What the consumer people forgot when they put out this warning was the weight of the product, one bottle holds a gallon of liquid expensive to ship. Have anyone here ever bought Avon in Antigua? expensive because of the shipping and the duty. These people should have done an analysis of the cost factors, not just compared the US price, that was beyond stupidity.

Is this a situation of satan warning against the dangers of sin? That seems to be the MO of most businesses in Antigua that sell durable goods etc, not just this unnamed salesman. The point raised by dunce is a perfect example; why should the cheapest Toyota (Yaris) that cost less than US13,000 brand new in the US cost so much in Antigua? Please spare me the charade. You guys have allowed a runaway laissez-faire attitude to become the norm no wonder we are in the mess we are in.

Can there be a more general warning? says:

Dig It, I was on a hiatus. Good to be back!
I do not think that people are disappointed that the CAD is offering advise. We are always happy to hear from the CAD. What persons are disappointed over is that there seems to be so many other entities around the island who jack up their prices sky high, but nothing seems to be done about them. I was in St. Maarten the other day and purchased some toiletries. Just looking at the cost locally made me realise that merchants in Antigua are making a killing. The sad part about it is that some of these merchants have their friends at Customs and many times are given a bligh. Of course, when these come it at the arrivals or cargo, without an invoice - a little pittance is paid and then the customer pays dearly!
The CAD should not speak out against this man alone. Should their voices not be heard concerning others?

Lets do the math here folks if it costs 11 dollars US now times 2.7 to ECD you get 29.70 ECD.
Add something for freight lets say 2.7 ECD because we know they didnt ship one bottle.
Okay so lets round up and say it cost 33 ECD to get that gallon here roughly. Next add Duty, ABST, and CST, finally lets say 33% for the merchants overhead and make a little profit. So lets go crazy and round up again and the shelf price should be about 45 ECD and if I want to get rich I'll charge 50 ECD.
By the way 44 USD equals about 119 ECD.
I think the words for this transaction are "Price Gouging" and "Extortion", sorry I don't see the merchants name I will not buy this product from anyone charging over 50 ECD. There is no cleaning product worth more.

Antiguans should be happy that they are being cautioned about exorbitant priced items. Before this "Citrus cleaner" entered the market, could someone advise what products were being used for cleaning? It doesn't matter from which part of the world this product/seller originated. Not because it is on the market everyone must run out and buy it. Beware of scams and schemes and inflated prices! Ask yourself this question, Do I need this product or do I want this product? Use the home grown products, GO GREEN.

Two thumbs down for The Prices and Consumer Affairs Division - shame on them

Well maybe they will look at the cost of things in Antigua, for a barrell you have to pay the shipping comany to prepare the papers, then you have to go and pay antother person to handle the barrel then you have to go and pay to take it out, outrageous. So does Consumer Affairs understand the process. Remember this, customs love to tell you what your items cost, even if you have the receipt saying what you paid for it. Consumer Affairs need to look at the importation policies in this country - its is where they are killing people, they seem to think that he brought it in for free. So how much does it cost to get the item here, that is what they should have talked about, so we can see if his price including shipping etc is justified.

If custome is robbing you then where is the money going? How can the government be broke when they are collecting much more than they should be? Does a 10 pound bag of flour make a really big biscuit?

Come now, this is simply comical! A government office using a news source to tell the country about a "man from Miami"? Methinks we need only look so far as "the man from customs" to know where the mark-up comes from. How many people have regularly brought goods into the island only to have a customs officer arbitrarily tell you that items worth, and then charge you upwards of 50%, 60%, 70% of its value? Wouldn't surprise me at all to find that a customs officer charged this man from Miami 200-300% of the cleaner's value, simply because he was too lazy to check the actual price, was a little light in his own pockets, or simply felt the need to show someone how important he is.

Is this man from Miami different from many of the stores and supermarkets here which charge an arm and a leg for goods that are minimally priced in the US? I think the Consumer Affairs people really need to do their work and look at the stores and supermarkets and ask them to lower some prices!

my chevrolet car cost $8000 us i bought it in antigua for $47000 ec do the maths. i do orders. i ordered something that cost $13 dollars us and when i was finished it cost $218.47 ec and thats without profit .i had to pay an additional shipping cost, for it to be sent to my mailbox in te US,then another cost to the shipping company to send it here. the weight of the items have alot to do with it if its coming by air or by port. then when the item reaches antigua customs charge u minimum 50% of what the product cost and not half of what the items cost alone but all the shipping costs are added plus the warrant charge on to the item cost. its all withing the discretion of the customs officer which is ridiculous. then what profit can u make on this item? that cleaner should stick to cleaning! buying a plain ticket for $1100 dollars to purchase some thing that cost $10.00 is crazy! and then hope that the custom officer dont charge u for your 1 bottle of orange cleaner. it does not add up. do the math........
