vote with prudence

Conforming to the status quo is not progress nor should it be something we encourage our young people to do, simply as a means of social compliance. Voting does little in resolving the economic issues many of us face in this country, without true inclusion and integration within the political workings of the system. If we're going to talk about improving our nation, its going to take more than voicing our hopes and dreams. We need accountability, and a revamping of our political structure. As a young man in this country i see the old guard as archaic and as a funnel of concentrated power in a few. Governance must first start with us the people, not with the external agents we are accustom to. To continue to acquiesce and comply provides no sign or indication that the flaws are greater than the benefits we acquire. If were going to surrender power to another as a trustee, who there fore has a fiduciary duty to work on our behalf. Then we must be concise in what we want, and our recourse clear. I'm not saying not to vote, however blindly doing so in ignorance or from societal pressures serves us no good. As an electorate let us take part with prudence an be astute in our judgement.

Good article but whats with all the USA comparisons and Lincoln quotes? You didn't even have to go back so far to the USA in the 1970's ... you could of start right here in Antigua & Barbuda ... in the last election (2009) Trevor Walker won in Barbuda by just 1 vote!!! In 1999 Guy Yearwood lost by just 5 votes!!! And in 2009 Bertrand Joseph lost by just 18 votes!!!

Vere Aaron, I stand by and join your call to all Antigua & Barbuda people especially the youth.... I implore and encourage you to keep making this motivational call in trying to awaken the minds and will of our people to embrace the role, rights and responsibilitie s we have as citizens and not the conditioning we have been taught in having to rely on politicians for any and everything etc... Just be mindful, that the road of enlightenment is gonna be rough since our people have not been taught civics and as such will not easily embrace your message...
