Unions Threaten LIAT With Strike

Unions wants LIAT to rescind its redundancy lettersAntigua St John's - The unions representing LIAT's workers have told the company to either rescind its redundancy letters or face region-wide industrial action.

The challenge came on Friday – three days after the letters were issued – from the head of the Council of Trade Unions within the LIAT system, Senator Chester Humphrey.

LIAT, in explaining its decision, had cited unsuccessful talks with union representatives for over a year, attempting to iron out an agreement that would allow it to cut recurring costs.

Dave Joseph, of the Antigua Trades and Labour Union (AT&LU), although not directly involved, provided some insight into the situation. He said whenever a bargaining agent represents workers, a contract is established and agreed to by both parties. This contract holds within it rules and regulations that bind both sides, and neither can decide to act contrary to it.

He said customarily if there is an impasse in the negotiations, the matter is referred to the Labour Department. If this stage still yields no results, the matter should then be directed to the minister of Labour and onwards, as needed.

“From my understanding, LIAT seeks to reduce staff," he said. "It is also my understanding that discussions are ongoing, and during this stage, LIAT decides to act on its own. It does not work that way."

He said where LIAT's management failed to adhere to the agreement, workers are within their rights (as provided for in the constitution of Antigua & Barbuda) to take industrial actions.

LIAT CEO Brian Challenger had said the airline’s end of June timeline for the layoffs reflected the urgency with which it needs to put closure to the situation.

“It has been ongoing for a long time, and we had to do a number of rescheduling, and during that time the company’s financial situation continues to deteriorate…” he said.

The airline said that while it understands that there is a recession, and its employees have families and homes of their own to maintain, the company must make the necessary sacrifices to ensure its own survival and therefore could not continue to carry the burden of obsolete functions.

Somebody Needs to Tell the Truth

Liat has been burdened for decades with unconscionable manmagement and Pilots' salaries, most over twenty thousand per month ... if anyone wants to know where all the money from the high fares are going just take a look at how much LIAT's management and pilots make.

LIAT should be allowed to go into bankruptcy and a new company should be formed to purchase the assets and start over the business from scratch with sensible salary policies that do not run the business into the ground.

skyewill like you I tend to book online. However there is a problem with LIAT's online booking feature when it comes to payment. My experience has been you make the reservation online and then call them to make the payment via credit card. Its so strange that their online software would reject your credit card yet when you provide the same details via phone, they are then able to charge the same card. The best answer they can give for why this is happening is that they are uncertain.

Scabs

The airline must survive. It is obvious that the union was playing around and stalling now they have no where to go. If they strike why can't LATE/LIAT hire new people? Liat should have used the trickle move and let go 3 - 5 people every other month to reduce the impact of strikes. In any way I see conflicts of interest if a Goverment official is also a union boss. Those offices should have been gone a long time ago because it is now industry standard to use other methods to book air fair. I only use internet to book my flight. Those offices are a waste of time for dodays consumer and without a doubt not worth it for the company. I wish LATE/LIAT well

How does LIAT lose money?

#1 Avid Reader » 2011-06-04 07:14

With tickets as expensive as they are on LIAT, how do they not make money? Not only the governments are bleading the people dry who travel on LIAT a regional airline, maybe they need to look at that inorder to increase travel through the region.
