Youth Business Plan Winners Upcoming

Business-Plan photo - siteboat.comAntigua, St John's - The winners in the Youth Business Plan Competition organised by the Department of Trade, Industry, and Commerce will be announced on March 31.

The initiative, envisaged as an annual event, aims to strengthen the private sector, and encourage entrepreneurship among the youth of Antigua & Barbuda.

Participants were exposed to opportunities to "be their own boss" and gain the knowledge and skills to establish their own businesses.

Entries were encouraged from students aged 15 to 25 at ABIT, ABHTI, ABICE, and the Antigua State College, in addition to students of government and privately-operated secondary schools.

The planning committee was made up of representatives from the Chamber of Commerce, ABIA, NDF, Ministry of Education, State College, and the Ministry of Broadcasting and Telecommunication.

Scheduled activities included a workshop in October 2010, a panel discussion in December 2010, and the submission of plans in January.

Prizes were sponsored by the US Embassy in Barbados. Facilitation of the workshop, along with judging, was done by a US Embassy official, volunteers from the private sector, and committee members.

Good luck to the winners, and all the youths that participated! A good initiative, I say, especially, in the much needed private sector!
