Sun Sets Temporarily

The SunThe Antigua Sun will not come out on Saturday, as turbulent financial times have reportedly left the newspaper unable to replenish its paper supply.

The company produces one of two daily papers in Antigua & Barbuda and will celebrate its 13th year next month.

However, Caribarena.com has been told that the publication has completely used up its paper reserves and is in a financial jam.

Manager of parent company Sun Printing and Publishing Ltd Pat Henry read a press release which said, “Circumstances beyond our control are currently preventing the printing of Antigua Sun and Sun St Kitts Nevis."

As an alternative, he pointed readers to the free online newspapers, adding that “Sun Printing and Publishing Limited is doing everything possible to resume publication in the shortest possible time."

The manager did not give the reason for the setback, but said the newspaper would not be down for long.

“We are hopeful that the problem we have can be resolved in a couple of days," he said. "It depends on circumstances. It’s difficult to be more precise to that right now but we are hoping that by Tuesday we are back on the road."

There are also reports that the company is having difficulties meeting its wage bill.  Reports said employees who are usually paid fortnightly saw March 15 pass without an income. As they draw closer to March 30, they fear there will be no change in the situation.

Henry would however not confirm those reports, saying that is an internal matter.

“We don’t want to be publicised about our internal affairs, but what I would say is that the situation in Sun Printing is the reflection of the situation generally in the country. You know things are a bit tight right now. But we are hoping that all of our issues will be resolved in the very near future,”  he said.

Lack of resources is no excuse for not prosecuting crime when it exists. What I think you don't have is the will to prosecute white collar crime.

I also share your sentiment. I suspect the difference may be with Stanford the US is involved so there will be no back door deals. Our legal system in the Caribbean has a way of not pursuing white collar crimes perhaps because we do not have the resources to do so

I guess Allen Stanford was good for something after all. By the way Caribarena, you need to do a piece on what is difference between what Stanford did and what is happening at Brtish American/Clico. Why is'nt somebody in jail or getting heat for that debacle? To me is the same thing, different jurisdiction.
