Antiguan Company Close After Bodog Shut Down

Antiguan Company Close After Bodog Shut DownAntigua St John's - Call Center Services (CCS), a company operating in Antigua and Barbuda, has been forced to close down after its largest client, Bodog.com, faced abrupt charges from the US Justice System.

US Federal Prosecutors said that the online gambling website, Bodog.com, generated in excess of US $100 million in winnings.

According to the US Attorney’s office, cheques were sent to Maryland between 2005-2012, amounting to a total of over $100 million dollars.

Four Canadians, including founder of Bodog.com Calvin Ayre, have been indicted with warrants set out for their arrest.

They are being accused of running an illegal gambling business and of money laundering, charges that could land them up to 25 years of jail time.

None of the four are yet in police custody. Ayre later posted on his website, denying the charges and stating that his company, Bodog.com, never accepted bets from the United States.

"Bodog UK, Bodog Europe and Bodog Asia have never taken bets from the US," the statement said. "The BodogBrand is currently consulting with its legal advisers with a view to having the domain returned."

Nonetheless, the Antiguan and Barbudan CCS will no longer be able to operate. With the loss of their largest client, the company no longer sees how it can maintain operations in a viable manner.

The company will be officially closed on the 9th of July. CCS employed over 156 employees, and was based in the ACT Teledome Building.

The company also assured its workers that they would receive their severance packages and further support in finding alternative employment within the local business community.

Why? because getting kicked out of the UK made Antigua "independent", and the US cannot and (unfortunately) does not interfere with things that happen in Antigua (btw, the US is now being sued for billions by Antigua's SIB investors for not interfering) .

So shouldn't the US be able to decide what it's citizens do within it's boarders with it's infrastructure and (insured) financial institutions? JUST LIKE ANTIGUA???? (obviously except for the insured financial institutions part)

Maybe you don't understand sovereignty. Let me explain it like this: Imagine if the US were simply kicked out of the UK for being more embar**ment and expense than they were worth like Antigua instead of enduring a bloody war costing tens of thousands of lives, and billions in today's money? Shouldn't that entitle them to the same sovereign rights as Antigua?

If an Antiguan in Willikies wants to place an online bet with a casino in Liberta, and use an Antiguan bank to pay, does the US interfere??? NO!

If an American wants to travel to Antigua and roll his overweight, ignorant self off the cruise ship and place a bet in an Antiguan casino, does the US interfere??? NO!

MY POINT OF VIEW REMAINS

#23 THE GODFATHER » 2012-05-09 20:23

Listen Colin, I wanty to be clear, my point of view remains, and if you do not like it, ignore it!

My first and second posting was relevant to the story, my third posting included IHI and APUA FUNDING, plus media responsibility, and that made you very, very irate? I don't have to question why, I suspect I know the reason, but that is your guilt.

I never called your name, never insinuated otherwise, but addressed the media. Is Caribarena, the only media house in Antigua and Barbuda, and since when you became CEO?

Your response posted 2012-05-9 10:38 displayed your wrath, subsequenlty followed by your tirade on your show. You assume you are the only one with rights, this is a democracy and I will continue to defend my rights of free speech. That you will never ever take away.

Don't get high blood pressure, its past your bedtime, relax your head, and find a weakling that you can intimidate!

I become very angry whenever I see evil masquerading as goodness, a twisted mentality attempting to present itself as sanity, deceit dressed in the clothes of righteousness, an obviously fine mentality perverted into the service of confusion.
What you are doing defies belief - it boggles the mind to encompass the level of intellectual duplicity the effort requires.
And no: I have no intention of "forming my own party" - like party is a style ...

John French II all signs show show we are in a decline. Was looking at the tourism numbers for the past years and what stood out was that the 2004 stay over numbers vs the 2011 ones show a decrease of almost 2%. I decided to look at other similar islands and could not see a similar situation. Jamaica led the pack with a almost 38% increase. Barbados saw a meager almost 3% growth. Note: Had to use the 2010 numbers for Saint Lucia since I could not find full 2011 numbers. Saint Lucia is reporting a 30% increase in stay over visitors from the UK for the first quarter of 2012, 15% more than the figures for this period 2011 (seewww.caribbean360.com/travel/573306.html#axzz1uPL1CGg8

Off Shore Demise

#18 Industry Veteran » 2012-05-09 15:42

Ayre makes no mention of Bodog.com that was doing U.S. bets. for years from Costa Rica & Kahnawake. Calvin Ayre and his media machine put a bullseye on his back and Bodog was always more hype to generate post up money than real bookmaking as any winners were quick to get chased out and the limits were low. As soon as Bush and the Republicans attached the funding internet gambling to a security port bill in December 2006 it basically doomed all these post up books using banks and credit cards for funding. Now this is the law they go after off shore groups with and the U.S. can care less about some WTO judgement against them on the matter since it can't be enforced for anything meaningful. If the U.S. blows off the U.N. invading Iraq do you think a WTO judgement from an Island nation gets a second thought. If this industry was taxed and legal in states non of these businesses would have ever been off shore in the first place like drugs in Columbia or Mexico and unfortunately thousands have lost jobs that pay usually less than half of a U.S. minimum wage around caribean countries & even Kahnawake where the wages were better than anywhere else.

What sense did the WTO ruling make when the US can still have this effect on our Gaming industry and the people it employs. Where else can these people (most of who are young) find viable work in this dwingling economy of Antigua and Barbuda? In this day and age where government is still paying people EC$1200 a month and rent exceeds that amount and the cost of living is so high, how will we survive? These companies were the only ones who offered employment that offered decent wages and opportunites and the US have obliterated them. I feel like the government of the day has done little to nothing to help the cause and I stand this day a truly disappointed voter.

You're exactly right. I can see your point of view, after all you live in a so-called country not worth the powder to blow it away (must be nice feeling so safe.) The US has more important issues to deal with.

Unfortunately, Antigua has already been used as an alleged testing ground for Saddam Husssein's ballistic gun, the recruiting and training grounds John Allen Mohammad used to create Lee Malvo (while selling genuine Antiguan passports to Allah only knows who) and now we see Antigua not only abdicate any responsibility for it's "banking sector", but actually taking for xxxx the remaining assets of the victims.

I'm glad the US has and enforces it's laws. Maybe Antigua should try it!

#10 THE GODFATHER » 2012-05-09 11:12

Colin, I know good governance responsibility starts with the electorate. So,if the electorates fail to elect the best people, are you telling me that this excuses the media. Is this your excuse?

Did the late Tim Hector not fight an endless struggle for the people of Antighua & Barbuda. You are just a damn coward, thats all or are you fearful of your so called 'friends'

What is indefensible about my argument, it's a folly because I agitate for media responsibility in reporting on IHI & APUA FUNDING. Well, I will not stop doing it! Are you not doing your work regarding WPP, continue your cause!

You talk about ',..shift responsibility for affecting change' but if it was not for Outlet and Observer persistence, would there be true media freedom in Antigua & Barbuda. You may not be able to talk today, so be thankful.

Please do not attempt ot shift responsibility for effecting change to the media.
The process starts with the honorable persons the electorate entrusts with the task of effecting beneficial change for the people.
You are patently trying to mislead your readers.
Fortunately, by your c** dishonesty you do more harm than good to your cause - and that demonstrates the folly of your argument.
So sad that so many fervent - and some sincere - UPP supporters are now caught up in the hopeless mission of defending the indefensible.

3-Reinterpret the activity- lying, minimising consequences
4-Use the partisan pen
5-Intimidate and bribe people

To solve the above, apply the opposite to all, regardless of political office. My views will never change, so dont try changing it, the process start with you, the media!

Today, there is also an issue surrounding IHI, monies were allegedly stolen from the Antiguan Treasury, government is investigating, but media coverage ends there. Is that good enough, no it is not! Are the media houses selective with their reporting, so tyhey ignore IHI and APUA FUNDING.

For example if the governemnt investigateed WPP and the fencing scandal, and it was to end in a stalemate, like IHI, what would the media action be?

The dramatic disclosure of IHI needs to be supported by intensive media attention, in this instance media coverage is non-exisitent. Their silence maybe understable, beacsuie the media is now part of the problem, so do not sell me no bleeping stinking fish. If they are part of vested business interest, or just elect not to see the reality that exist, they too are blind. So why not investigate IHI,APUA FUNDING and so many other issues, there is only one reason, keep feeding the public with your agenda! I will evaluate 5 reason politicians and their partisan writers and radio host ignore

1-Cover up the activity
2-Devalue the target

In Antigua & Barbuda BoDog followed the rules, but within this industry, there are usually shakedowns that value million & millions of dollars. This money does not end up in the Antigua Treasury, but in offshore accounts.

There are politicians who use their public office for private gain, an example is india former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi who professessed to be Mr. Clean, his mother Indira Gandhi never professed such traits. When Indira Gandhi was asked about corruption in her government she said "It was a global phenomen" subsequently it was exposed Rajiv Gandhi widow Sonia Gandhi was controlling a Swiss account valued US$2.2 billion dollars.

It can be argued that MPs use their office for private gain too, and valued sensitive information are traded for bribes paid in the millions to escape any form of justice!

If there is anyone who wishes to know the movers & shakers in the I-Gaming world, one attends the Global Interactive Gaming Summit & Expo [GIGSE] and here is where you would have met Calvin Ayre.

Today, Calvin is a wanted man by the U.S. and only the U.S. for violating Title 18 Section 1084 of the U.S,. Code which forbids usinfg telephones or other communication device "in interstate or foreign commerce" in order to take bets. The vexatious issue is that Calvin hjad more monies than the Vegas casino, and that made him an enemy of the U.S.A.

From his journey to Costa Rica in 1996 setting up Winsports and Grandprix, Ayre launched his own site in April 2000. He had the 'bookies' and all the customer service representative, that he handled US7.5 billion in online wages, triple the volume of 2004, and making more than what Las Vegas was making!
