Unions To LIAT - Retract Letter

Unions To LIAT - Retract LetterAntigua St John's - The unions representing LIAT employees across its system are calling on the Antigua-based airline to retract it letters of termination dispatched to workers last week or face disruption to its operation.

The letters to over thirty employees were sent out last Thursday and which are due to take effect on April 15.

General Secretary of the Antigua and Barbuda Workers Union, Senator David Massiah, said both he and his Grenadian counterpart, Senator Chester Humphrey, have dispatched a letter to the airline demanding that it retracts the letter or face possible disruption of its operation across the entire LIAT network.

“Senator Humphrey and I have already touched base with the union representatives across the system and they are waiting for our signal to take action,” he stated.

Massiah said the move by LIAT would see 33 staff members getting the axe in phase one of the planned staff deductions with fourteen more to follow in the second phase.

“The majority of these people will come from Antigua and this further cements my belief that there are efforts afoot to move LIAT’s entire operational base from Antigua,” he declared.

The union boss did not mince his words when he spoke about the top management of the airline.

“You have people who are making large salaries every month and you want to tell me that up to now they cannot arrive at a strategic plan to turn around this airline. Bad management is what is responsible for LIAT to be in the position it’s in. For example, despite not operating at its Woods City Office, the airline is still paying the rent, because nobody took the time to check the lease. That’s bad management! Why then do they always want to chop at the bottom?” he asked rhetorically.

Massiah said the airline’s decision to undertake the staff deduction is premature as there are on-going discussions on the issue.

“The company acted hastily when it dispatched the letters. It has not listened, nor took on board the many suggestions and requests the unions made in an effort to arrive at solutions to the challenges the airline faced.

"When the unions requested a comprehensive plan of how the airline intended to carry out its stated streamlining of its operations and staff reduction, we were only given a mere summary,” he disclosed.

According to Massiah…the airline’s reasons for not disclosing its plans came out of its fears that the plan would fall into the hands of its competitors.

“We suggested that the plan should only be discussed with a small select committee to include – Sir Roy Trotman of Barbados, Senator Humphrey, Capt. Arthur Senhouse of the Pilots’ Association and me,” he noted. However, he said that this suggestion has not found favour with the airline.

Massiah said he is calling on Prime Minister, Baldwin Spencer, to look into this matter, particularly in light of the impact that the planned retrenchment would have on several households against the background of the prevailing economic conditions.

RE: Unions To LIAT - Retract Letter

This is an embar**ment for the governments who have a share on the Airline and LIAT management as they not have the capability to deliver their customers the service that they deserve. Possibly caught on conflict of interest or plain mismanagement.

Same old Union Rhetoric

#5 AMP EMP » 2012-04-11 09:50

The good Union Boss is a Joke...he uses the same rhetoric each time he speaks. Are you aware that Antigua xaxonxy xroxuxts sent home several Antiguan workers and replaced them with foreign workers. The Union Boss did nothing, simply because he is in xxxed xocket.

When it comes to Liat and Port the Management never knows what they are doing and they must send home the management leaving the overstaffed departments alone.

From General Secretary To Senators Of The Past.

Notes From A Native Son of The Rock. That the Airline Industry has evolved since the 1970's has baffled many of the Caribbean Leaders. They have not developed the appropriate equity structure, management or a shared vision of what is one of the most important regional transportation initiatives and economic drivers.

The Good Senator and General Secretary knows not of either Vision, Mission or Strategic Plan. Why not have a word with your Political Leader?
If this is the level of Business Acumen and Political Savvy that is being brought to the enterprise by two major Unionists and Senators, it is quite clear that the Customers are in for Turbulent Flights in the Caribbean Skies.

Who's running the instituion?

#3 only in antigua » 2012-04-11 08:50

Lets send all the managers home and let the unions run the company. And then we can get the passangers to fly the planes. We need to hire more people at the bottom so we can give every one a larger pay check and more time off. Then we can get the country to bail the "Airline " out and start all over again. What we need durring these almost depression like economic times is another strike by our airline. If they time it right they could schedule it for Sailing Week. Let them close the country down to prove who's really running the instituion.
Many years ago Labour unions were formed to stop sweat shops, child labour, and dramitic unsafe working conditions. Today the union wants to run the company. The only thing Liats unions have in commen with the true labour movement is they are trying to protect ther child like behaviour of their reps.
Some has to stop this nonsence and give the country/region a well run no noncense airline.

Get Real Massiah

#2 Inquiring Mind » 2012-04-11 08:37

Unions in Antigua and the wider Caribbean need to get a reality check. In these difficult economic times, management of companies must take steps to streamline their operations, focus on profitable segments, and discard or phase out cost centres. Are the Unions suggesting that LIAT continue to maintain loss making activities? Don't the Unions realize that to do so will endanger the livelihood of the entire LIAT staff complement of 1,000 workers, rather than the 33 workers who will be retrenched? Do the maths, and stop making yourselves a bunch of fools!

WHAT A JOKE

#1 STEVE » 2012-04-11 05:14

The last paragraph of this article is just such a joke. So let me get this right. A decision was made to send home employees from the second largest share holder to reduce expenses, to the extent that the economy of this share holder will be affected, and the taxpayers from this same second largest share holder still carry the bill for this airline to "run unprofitable routes in the name of c.s.m.e."? IT IS SUCH A PITY THAT ONE CANNOT USE COLOURFUL LANGUAGE ON THIS SITE. :sigh:
