Russian Businessmen Enticed to Invest

L-ABIA Employee. R- Russian visitor enjoying a taste of carnivalAntigua St John's - The atmosphere was ripe for investment Tuesday evening when the Antigua and Barbuda Investment Authority, in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and the Jolly Harbour Marina, presented numerous investment opportunities to a group of Russian businessmen on island for a week of sailing and business.

The forum was a mini-trade fair where businesses including Global Bank of Commerce, Nonsuch Bay Developments, Luxury Locations Estate Agents, Pearns Point, Island Living, and South Point operated booths.

Minister Hilson Baptiste, parliamentary representative for the St Mary’s South constituency, both welcomed the Russians to Antigua & Barbuda on behalf of his government, and invited the prospective investors to indulge in the profitable propositions being offered.

In addition, he presented a copy of the award-winning Table Manners culinary review to the wife of the Russian Consul for the Eastern Caribbean, Egor Blagodatskiy.

Also present at the gathering were Ambassadors Mac Emmanuel and Jeff Hadeed, Minister of Culture Eleston Adams, Chairman of the National Parks Authority Claude Anthony, and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, Civil Aviation and Culture Millinette Ambrose.

The visitors were treated to the sounds of sweet local and regional soca, played by the famous Chicki’s Hi-Fi, and joined in the presentation produced by the Beautiful People Mas Band, which showcased their 2011 Carnival production, “What Happens in Vegas” by Calvin Southwell.

Before the culmination of the evening’s event, representatives of a few of the presenting businesses were beaming over the interest shown in their products and looking forward to follow-up opportunities.

For the Antiguan co-ordinating team, Tuesday night’s event was one of the major highlights of the week, as it was another chance to boost economic activity for the twin-island state during uncertain economic times.

The Russian Business Sailing Week activities move to the historic Nelson’s Dockyard area on Wednesday, with the official closing set to take place on Friday evening at the Copper and Lumber Restaurant.

Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock. Shaka, Chaku, The Queen of Spades, The MisEducated and The Dame of Ethical Badmindedness are at the top of their game. Quote:
My scheming game, born of the Bridge, was no different. I awoke filled with a cruel plan to assemble a band of Spades who would lead the other way - to rob the hamlet-dwellers' fortunes in the countryside: a selection of Clubs with dazzling masquerading skills and truely heartless masks were needed to complete this task and cruel mission. So, I sought the most notorious Aces, who could abandon their musical bands for a short time. - Edgar O Lake.

@Morris, communist and Socialist countries investing in ANU, has nothing to do with the populace...it's to keep a particular party in power.

there need to be a balance

This always facinates me that the government seem to think that they have to run all over the world looking for the so called investor to come and put our economy right. What happen to the small and indiginous business person who could benefit from some of the same tax brakes and incentives that is being offered to the overseas investor, to me the local investor have more interest in his business growing and that way they are more able to employ people and thereby grow. Small business is the engine of any economy these guy need to think local and encourage our people that have money to invest in the country.

Greed

#14 Lionman » 2012-03-22 16:35

Begging from those who think less of us. Why don't these governement officials implement training programs to the youths to become self-sustained. If they had Cubans building roads a while back why didn't they have young people learning this trade and have Antiguan engineers supervise these young people to build roads around Antigua. There are many job training programs that could be put in place to have the country develop empowerment. The more you invest in your own the most you get out of it instead of begging others who think less of us.

Agreed. What I hate about FDI into the financial and hospitality sectors is that it just nurtures the cycle of dependence on foreign income. It creates a mentality that ultimately sustains itself - one of subservience and begging. The ideas you put forward have real merit and, in some cases, would take a fraction of the investment of these property developments. Perhaps liberating our people is not to the advantage of these investors however...

Good questions. I am confident that ANU is ripe for some small scale manufacturing, product assembly, pharmaceutical research, cannery etc. These are the type of investments that will not only bring revenue to the shores of ANU, but the necessary skill sets to prepare the citizens for a successful future. I always wonder with the abundance of flora in ANU and their medicinal properties, why haven't the gov't sought international support to fully develop this into perhaps the premier medicinal research industry in the C'bean? Imagine the possibilities. We have an abundance of fruits that could be processed, packaged, and sold in juice and solid form around the C'bean as well. Why must most of the beverages only be produced in JA and T&T when ANU has the potential to do likewise? We should be fighting to establish a presence in that arena too.

did I miss something?

#9 fnpsr » 2012-03-22 11:16

I did not get a lot out of this article. I know there was a presentation and a lot of nice music entertained the group, but what I did not get is what were presented to the group.

Quote:

Does anyone know what the “profitable propositions” are? Did I miss something?

Diversification

#7 dadlison » 2012-03-22 10:10

So all the investment opportunities in Antigua are in the hospitality sector? Not a single investment opportunity in technology or manufacturing? This my friends is why we can't strive.

The new Mafia

#5 Judge Dredd » 2012-03-22 08:35

Everyone knows that when communism fell in Russia, the Mafia and criminals took over and became incredibly wealthy. One characteristic of the Russain Mafia has been their penchant for violence. They have made the Italian Mafia and the Jamaican Passees lokk like school children
But we will welcome them. They qualify unconditionally because they are not BLACK and you know it is only black people that the UPP don't love.

Is this is what we will now resort to? What were we really trying to sell here?

More lessons

#3 James » 2012-03-22 07:45

Please UPP Government, remember the lessons from the Alan Stanford case! Antigua cannot take and survive another international scandal! Why do our leaders insist on going after tainted money? Is there something passing under some table somewhere? We want to know!

RE: Russian Businessmen Enticed to Invest

#1 Morris » 2012-03-22 07:03

I welcome foreign investment, but I think the gov't needs to do its due diligence before signing any paperwork. There are some very unscrupulous Russian businessmen and ANU surely does not need another black eye.

Another thing, are there no investors from democratic countries interested in doing business in ANU? We already rely heavily on China and Venezuela for most of our needs, and likely looking to have Russia on board too. There needs to be some balance so we're not viewed as leaning too much toward their ideals.
